Ce se poate întâmpla când devii parte a unei revoluții care, aparent, nu te privește?
Tonul lui Guillermo Arriaga m-a surprins încă de la primele pagini din Escadron Ghilotina. Deși l-am „cunoscut” până acum doar prin filmele pe care le-a scris (Babel, 21 de grame etc.), mă așteptam la o scriitură densă și gravă. În schimb, am descoperit o scriitură „ușoară” care se construiește în straturi, ascunse de un umor negru și fin din care transpare o realitate rece și crudă. Căci nimic nu poate fi „ușor” atunci când ești parte a unei revoluții sângeroase… un fapt pe care neștiutorul avocat Velasco ajunge să îl trăiască pe pielea lui.
Dorindu-și faimă și câștiguri rapide, Velasco se duce în tabăra liderului revoluției mexicane, Pancho Villa, cu o invenție menită să asigure câștigul rapid al oricărui conflict, ghilotina. Într-o primă răsturnare de situație, Villa, entuziasmat de potențialul instrumentului de execuție, dar fără nici un interes de a risipi banii, il înrolează pe avocat în ceea ce se instituie pe loc drept „Escadronul Ghilotina din Torréon.” Astfel, bărbatul de proveniență nobilă (de altfel, aceeași nobilime împotriva căreia luptă Villa) se trezește aruncat în viața „grea” a soldatului revoluționar.
Guillermo Arriaga se joacă, într-un stil de-a râsu’-plânsu’, cu destinul lui Velasco pe de o parte, față în față cu destinul lui Villa și al revoluției pe de altă parte. Personajele sale trăiesc măriri și decăderi subite, sunt roase de gânduri și îndoieli, grandoarea revoluției fiind un fundal înșelător pentru o viață mizeră de zi cu zi în tabăra militară. Nimic nu este ceea ce pare, scriitorul deconstruind strategii, funcții și chiar rolul media în „afacerea” revoluționară. Ghilotina devine un personaj în sine, suferind aceleași măriri și decăderi în ritmul în care Villa și Velasco își trăiesc propriile umiliri.
„Au avut loc, din nou, lupte și mari vărsări de sânge. Era de așteptat: revoluționarii aveau prea puține legături unii cu alții, se ghidau după concepții despre lume și despre viață diferite.„ Revoluția mexicană văzută prin ochii unor oameni simpli devine o revoluție a sângelui și efectelor impresionante ale „promovării” prin forță și ghilotină, combinate cu plictiseala, rutina și abrutizarea vieții de insurgent. Volumul este plin de astfel de contraste, atât prin modul în care se suprapun personajele și interesele proprii, cât și faptele și imaginile de pe „câmpul de luptă”. Arriaga presară toate acestea cu ironie, trădări și chiar poezie, transformând o narațiune densă într-o scriitură ușoară, plină de subînțelesuri ce cântăresc greu, la final de zi... ori de revoluție.
