Andreea Chebac: In your book, The Mango Orchard, what part is real and what part is fiction?

Robin Bayley:The Mango Orchard is non-fiction. It all happened. The only things I changed were the order of some of the events, so that it read better, and some of the names, to protect privacy.

AC: Is there a woman like Juanita in your life?

RB: Yes, she’s called Juanita!

AC: Are you working on a new book right now?

RB: I have just started working on two. Maybe the two will combine, not sure yet. Both are extraordinary true stories.

AC: Do you think that the pressure will be greater on your shoulders when writing your second book, because of the success of your first book?

RB: Maybe, but i find it’s easier to write when you know there is a demand for what you are writing.

AC: What have you inherited from your Mexican ancestors?

RB: My Mexican relatives and I share my great grandfather’s genes. I can see certain traits in some of them. I’m told that I inherited his green eyes and a love of travel.

AC: Do you believe in destiny, like the main character of your book?

RB: Absolutely.

AC: Was it difficult for you to write The Mango Orchard?

RB: Writing is never easy, and being dyslexic certainly didn’t make it any easier. During the years of researching and writing, people would often ask me what I was working on and the reaction I got when I told them the story – open mouthed amazement – was a great encouragement. I knew I had a good story to tell.

AC: What made you to give up your secure job that you had and to start being a writer – a less secure job?

RB: That’s what my bank manager wanted to know! I started to write as I didn’t want to regret not having done so. I felt suffocated, not doing what I really wanted to do. You have to learn to follow what your instinct tells you or you die.

AC: Did you visit the places that are described in your book – Mexico, Latin America?

RB: Of course. I was in all the places that I described, and more. I know that some novelists can describe places they have never been to. That’s a great skill to have, but The Mango Orchard is the account of a journey very much lived. That’s the only way I could write it.

AC: If you would rewrite the book, would you change anything at it ?

RB: No. I knew when I had finished. My part in the story ended that day – although I am still in contact with virtually everyone who appears in the book. From now on it’s for those who read it to relate it to their own lives.
